2021 was a big year for Kyber™ herbicide. It was the first year farmers across the Midwest got to use the soybean preemergence herbicide to keep their fields clean.

Dillan Smith, co-owner of Smith Brothers Agronomy in Newell, Iowa, says Kyber performed very well for his customers. He says the herbicide kept some of the most difficult, herbicide-resistant weeds out of their fields and held up under some less-than-ideal conditions. So why does Smith say Kyber is the best soybean preemergence herbicide on the market? Well, he says, the solution provides a lot of benefits to growers. The first is convenience. “It was good. It was convenient — all three active ingredients were in one jug,” Smith says.
Smith also shares Kyber held up well despite very dry weather throughout the season: “We didn’t have a lot of moisture this spring, and the combination of the three modes of action in Kyber fared better than the competition.”
On top of all that, Smith says, he and his customers were very impressed with the extended residual activity Kyber offered.
“They were really happy — six weeks after application, their fields were really clean. It was a surprise. In a dry year like we had, the preemergence herbicides don’t last as long. This year, it held really well,” Smith explains.
The Best on the Market
When it comes to the weeds Smith’s customers face in northwestern Iowa, he says, there is one broadleaf that gives them the most trouble: “waterhemp, waterhemp and more waterhemp.”
Smith says waterhemp in his area is resistant to several herbicide modes of action. So it can be very difficult for farmers to deal with. The weed can also limit soybean yield if left to flourish, so it’s incredibly important to keep it at bay.
“Waterhemp is getting harder and harder to control. The single-mode-of-action products and generics don’t hold up long enough and then the postemergence products just aren’t 100% effective anymore, and now those are the dirtiest fields in my area,” Smith explains.

“If you battle waterhemp, it truly has three active ingredients that all still work on waterhemp,” Smith says. “I can’t think of another preemerge with three modes of action that work as good against waterhemp.”
