Description: Barnyardgrass is an annual grass that prefers wet sites. Stems of young barnyardgrass plants often grow outward along the ground before turning upward. Stems are flattened near the base and may reach a height of 5 feet. This weed is the only common summer grass that has no hairs or membranes at the collar region and lacks a ligule. Flower heads are extremely variable but they often droop slightly, with lower flower branches farther apart than upper ones. It is closely related to and resembles junglerice without the distinctive purple bands.

Description: A summer annual that produces a conspicuous prickly cocklebur and ranges from ½ foot to 6½ feet in height. The relatively large, linear to oblong, waxy cotyledons help to distinguish this weed in the early stages of development. In addition, the long triangular leaves, stems with maroon to black lesions, and the distinctive prickly cocklebur fruit all are features that help in the identification of this weed. The cotyledons of common cocklebur are much longer and more linear than those of giant ragweed.

Description: Giant ragweed is a summer annual that can grow up to 16 feet tall. Its leaves are large and distinctively three-lobed but can sometimes be five-lobed. Its rough, hairy leaves are about 6 inches long and 4 to 6 inches wide. Opposite leaves occur in pairs at nodes. It prefers moist soil.

Description: A summer annual twining or climbing vine with distinctive three-lobed leaves and large showy purple to blue or white flowers. Cotyledon leaves have a distinctive butterfly shape. Leaves, stems and fruit can be somewhat hairy. It produces burlike seedpods.

Description: Common lambsquarters is a summer annual with medium to pale green stems with red stripes. Stems tend to be multibranched, growing 1 to 6 feet tall. Leaves are shaped like a goose foot, often with a whitish powdery coating. Common lambsquarters prefers fertile, cultivated soils, meaning that a lambsquarters infestation is a good indicator of good soil.

Description: Marestail is an erect winter or summer annual reaching 6½ feet in height. Seedlings develop a basal rosette from which sprouts a 2- to 6-foot tall stalk covered with narrow leaves. The stems usually are hairy and branch near the top. At the top of the stalks are small white flowers that ripen to white, windblown parachute seeds.

Description: An erect summer annual that may reach 6½ feet in height. Seedlings have leaves that are narrow and green to reddish in color. Its first true leaves are alternate, oval-shaped and slightly notched at the tip of the leaf. Mature leaves are alternate, without hairs, and lance-shaped or egg-shaped in outline. Leaves are 2 to 8 inches long and a half inch to 2½ inches wide. Stems are without hairs. Leaf petioles often are as long as — or longer than — the leaf blade. Seed heads measure 1 to 2 feet in length.

Description: Velvetleaf is aptly named because the large leaves are velvety-hairy. It is an erect summer annual with leaves and stems that are covered with short, soft hairs. Seedlings have one round and one heart-shaped cotyledon. The first true leaves and subsequent leaves are alternate, heart-shaped and covered with hairs on both surfaces. Mature leaves are approximately 2 to 6 inches long and wide and have slightly toothed margins.

Description: Common waterhemp is a slender, willowy plant with many branches. Mature plants range from 4 inches to 12 feet in height. Stems and leaves often are brightly colored, varying from deep red or pink to emerald green. Its stems, leaves and seed head all may be differently colored on a single individual plant. Stems and leaves are very smooth and hairless with a bright, glossy appearance. Leaves are long and narrow.
